Diagnosis
The most common electrical faults
These are the faults we come across most often, and what usually causes them.
- 01
Breaker or RCD that trips
It cuts out as soon as you plug something in, or for no obvious reason: a faulty appliance, an insulation fault or an overloaded circuit. We find the culprit.
- 02
Partial power cut
One room, one floor or one circuit no longer works while the rest of the home has power.
- 03
Dead socket or switch
A socket that no longer gives power, a switch that crackles or no longer controls anything: replaced to standard.
- 04
Burning smell
A smell of hot plastic near a socket, a switch or the fuse box is a warning sign: an overheating contact can cause a fire.
- 05
Socket or plug getting hot
A loose contact, a worn socket or an overloaded extension lead: heat is the first sign of dangerous overheating.
- 06
Flickering lights
Bulbs that flicker or repeated voltage drops: a loose connection, a faulty dimmer or a problem on the circuit.
Safety
Bare wire, sparks, burning smell: what to do
Switch off the main breaker immediately at your fuse box, don't touch the wires or the appliance concerned, and keep children away.
Never try to repair a bare cable or a blackened socket yourself. If someone has had an electric shock, don't touch them before cutting the power. In the event of an electric shock or a fire starting, call 112 without delay.
Once the situation is safe, call us: an electrician comes within 24 hours, 7 days a week, finds the fault and gets the power back on.

Before you call
Three checks that save time
- 01
Is the whole street affected?
If your neighbours are also in the dark, the fault is on the public network, run by the network operator (Sibelga in Brussels): your installation isn't the problem.
- 02
Which breaker has tripped?
Find the breaker or RCD in the down position at the fuse box. If it won't reset or trips straight away, don't force it.
- 03
Unplug, then reset
Unplug the appliances on the circuit concerned and reset it. If everything comes back, plug them in one by one: the one that trips everything is probably faulty.
The RCD trips even with everything unplugged? The fault is in the installation itself: that's the time to call us.

Yes. Overheating means a poor contact or an overload, which can cause a fire. Unplug whatever is connected, switch off the circuit at the fuse box and have it checked quickly.
