Over the years, rust, limescale and debris form a sludge that settles at the bottom of the radiators and even in the boiler.

Protecting the circuit afterwards

Making the right choice
New boiler or heat pump? Flush first
Fitting a new boiler on a circuit full of sludge exposes it to the same deposits from the first winter. Many manufacturers also require a clean circuit for their warranty to apply.
It's even more true for a heat pump, which is sensitive to the quality of the water in the circuit. When replacing a boiler, we tell you whether power flushing is recommended.

For pump flushing, generally allow half a day to a day depending on the number of radiators. A chemical treatment works over several weeks.
There's no fixed frequency: a circuit protected by an inhibitor and a filter can stay clean for a long time. A check every 5 to 10 years is generally recommended, and flushing as soon as symptoms appear.
It isn't a legal requirement, but it's strongly recommended and often required by manufacturers for the warranty. A new boiler on a sludged-up circuit wears out faster.
