Water leak: what to do first
A leak can quickly cause damage in your home… and in the flat below. A few simple steps limit the damage until we arrive.
1. Turn off the water
Close the shut-off valve of the appliance concerned (toilet, washbasin, washing machine) if there is one. If not, close the main stopcock, usually near the Vivaqua water meter, often in the cellar or a utility room.
2. Turn off the electricity if the water is near appliances
If the water reaches sockets, appliances or the fuse box, switch off the main breaker before going near. If there is any danger, call 112.
3. Protect and document
Mop up, put a container under the leak and take photos: they will be useful for your insurer. In a flat, warn the neighbours below and your property manager.
4. Call us

Yes, tap water in Brussels is fairly hard. Limescale builds up in taps, shower heads and water heaters, which reduces the flow and wears out the equipment. Regular descaling makes them last longer.
