Why service your water heater?

With Brussels' hard water, a service every 1 to 2 years is generally advised, depending on how much hot water you use.
The anode wears away instead of the tank, protecting it from corrosion. Once it's used up, the tank starts to rust: that's why it's worth checking regularly.
A little water while it heats is normal: it's the water expanding. If it runs all the time, the safety valve is probably faulty and needs replacing.
On average 10 to 15 years, depending on the water quality and the servicing. A water heater that's never descaled in Brussels ages much faster.
For a short absence, just lower the temperature. For a long one, you can switch it off: when you're back, let it heat to at least 60 °C once before using the water.
